Hwange National Park

A haven for over 20,000 elephants, Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest, covering over 5,600 sq. miles (14,600 sq. kl.). This is classic game viewing wilderness with wide open savannah, rocky out crops and sparse woodlands perfect habit for Africa’s large mammals.

The northern edge is only 60 miles south of Victoria falls and stretches 200 miles along the border with Botswana. This semi arid landscape is dotted with water holes, sustaining all the large mammals including large herds of elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, white rhino, spotted hyena, giraffe, sable, blue wildebeest, impala and waterbuck.

This vast wilderness is home to over 100 animal species and 420 different kinds of birds. It has some of the largest populations of African wild dog left Africa. Large prides of lion and buffalo and all the predators, in addition to white rhino.

It’s most common to arrive by light aircraft from Livingstone Zambia, or Victoria Falls, but the northern area is accessible by road, just a few hours drive. There are a variety of small safari camps, many of which are on private concessions, so you can go on guided walks and night game drives.

Hwange can also be easily combined with safaris in Botswana or Zambia.
